Florence Akin collection
Overview
Florence Akin was born in Franklin County, Kansas, where she taught for many years and served as County Superintendent of Schools. This collection contains her published obituary and a photograph of her, as well as Miss Akin's written thoughts on county school supervision, composed soon after her election as County Superintendent.

Biography of Florence Akin
Elizabeth Florence Akin was born January 1, 1869 on a farm near the Richmond community of Franklin County, Kansas. Her parents were William A. and Cerelda J. (Cunningham) Akin. Florence was twelve when her mother died, leaving Florence in the care of her father and an older sister. She became a school teacher at an early age, teaching at several Kansas communities and then at Richmond, where she taught for more than twenty-five years before being elected to two consecutive terms as Franklin County Superintendent of Schools. Miss Akin died on April 3, 1921 at Richmond and was buried in the Richmond Cemetery.
