Ernest Crown photographs
Overview
The photographs in this collection record Ernest Crown's family, farm, and community activities in Smith County, Kansas and his work in the Methodist Church. The first 180 images in the collection were taken by Ernest Crown; the rest, numbered 181-213, were taken by other photographers and are also of the Crown family and farming, as well as rural schools in Smith County. Photographers for these latter images are noted whenever known.

Biography of Ernest Othniel Crown
Ernest O. Crown was born August 8, 1880, in Cora Township, Smith County, Kansas. He was the first child of Civil War veteran Joseph Wheeler Crown and his wife Martha Ellen Staley Crown. Ernest Crown became very active in church life after he was converted in the Community revival of 1915 at the [Women] United [Brethren] Church.

Processing Information
The prints in folders 1-180 were originally taken on glass plate negatives, which are included in the collection. To better preserve the glass plate negatives, the negatives have kept the corresponding print's folder number but been split into seven boxes. Other prints (181-213) are copies of original images, but the original negatives are not included in the collection.
