This collection contains scattered family papers, some of Rayhill's business correspondence, and photographs of the Rayhill family, who migrated from the eastern half of the United States in the late 19th century and lived in Warrensburg, Missouri.

Biography of George Walter Rayhill

George Walter Rayhill was born in St. Clair County, Illinois, the son of Charles and Charity Jane Fike Rayhill. He attended school in St. Clair County and later attended McKendree College in Lebanon, IL.

In 1874, the family moved to Warrensburg, Missouri to take advantage of the educational opportunities for younger members of the family. George studied law in the office of Elliott and Jetmore in Warrensburg and was admitted to the bar in 1876.

Rayhill and Laura Brinkerhoff were marred on October 25, 1877, and five children were born to the couple: one of whom died in infancy, and Charles B., Lela, Martha, and Mary. Lola died at age 17, Charles became a minister, Martha became a school teacher, and Mary the mother of three children.

Scope and Contents

Papers at RH MS 82 include legal documents and some family or personal materials for various members of the Rayhill and Brinkerhoff families. Photographs at RH MS-P 82 include images of several generations of the Rayhill family, including Fikes and Brinkerhoffs and other relatives. At RH MS B45 are three volumes from the collection, Rayhill's diaries and a bible, and at RH MS R13 are oversize certificates and other materials from George Walter and daughter Martha Rayhill.
