Biographical history of the Fowler-Rose-Thompson and related families

Samuel Barker Fowler (d. 1837) lived in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. His son, Samuel (1811-after 1873), emigrated to Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin in 1846 or 1847.

Samuel Fowler's daughter, Viletta (1847-1920), married Fernando Joseph Rose (1840-1918) in Wisconsin and moved to Almena, Norton County, Kansas, before 1891.

Samuel Fowler's second wife and mother of his only surviving children was Lucinda Delight Lane.

Samuel Fowler's daughter Sarah Elizabeth (1843-1874) married John Sawyer.

Fernando Joseph Rose's sisters, Sarah Rosannah and Emma, married the Thompson brothers, Joseph Henry and Thomas Creighton.

Another sister of Fernando Joseph Rose, Ermina (1837-1936), married Owen Smith.

The Brackens, of Pennsylvania and Kansas, were relatives of the Thompsons, through the Bullocks (see family tree). Mary Bracken married Talbot Jefferson Bullock. Their daughter, Harriet Frances (Hattie) married Claude Llewellyn Thompson.

Scope and Contents

Personal and business papers of the families of Fowler, Rose, and Thompson, and their connections, the Bracken, Lane, Sawyer, Shonerd, Ott, Smith and Bullock families. The bulk of the papers are from the Fowlers (19th century, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin), the Roses (19th and 10th centuries, Wisconsin and Kansas), and the Thompsons (19th and 20th centuries, Kansas), and most of the records are concerned with land, farming, and taxes, with some pension records and family letters. The papers are arranged by family in chronological order. Bound volumes are located in RH MS 88 Box 2, while oversize items and photographs are separately inventoried and housed.

Fowler family papers include business and tax records, land records, letters from the family of Samuel Barker Fowler, daughter Roxey Fowler Clink, who stayed in Pennsylvania, and from his son, Amasa Fowler, who moved to Missouri, to Samuel Fowler and his family in Wisconsin.

Rose family papers include business and tax records, Civil War veteran's benefit records, and other official papers. The largely genealogical papers from the Lane family seem to have been enclosed with letters of a nephew, Edgar C. Lane, to Viletta Fowler Rose.

Sawyer family papers include deeds and miscellaneous papers.

Thompson family papers largely consist of financial records of J.H. and Sarah Thompson during their life in Kansas, and of their nephew, Claude L. Thompson, as well as the Nebraska diary kept by Sarah Rosannah Rose in 1875, located at RH MS A30.

Smith family papers are composed of photographs and a newspaper obituary for Ermina Rose Smith.
