Administrative History of Carter Bros. Hardware Co.
The Carter Brothers Store was established by Jacob V. and N.W. Carter in 1884. The firm changed owners several times, but finally came into the hands of Walter Oakley and Ira John Carter, his brother. Both W.O. and I.J. Carter held county and city offices and I.J. served in the state legislature. At a later period active management of the firm passed to R. Irving and Chester A. Carter, sons of W. O. Carter; thus, the Carters' represent three generations in the Garden City firm.
Biography Of W.O. Carter
W.O. Carter was one of the pioneers in pump irrigation in Finney County. The first centrifugal pump used for irrigation in the Garden City area was installed by him in the 1890's. Carter Brothers then began building pumping plants to irrigate entire farms in western Kansas.
