History of the James A. McHenry, Jr. family

James A. McHenry, Jr. was born February 29, 1944 in Topeka, Kansas to James A. McHenry, Sr. and Elizabeth (Schenck) McHenry. The parents of Elizabeth Schenck McHenry were Leland Hebbard Schenck and Lena Baxter Schenck, who married in 1919 at Topeka. Leland Schenck's father was George H. Schenck. His mother, Mary Frances Hebbard Schenck, was the daughter of J. C. (Joseph Carr) Hebbard and Rosetta Northup Hebbard.

In 1879, he settled in Topeka, where he served as the first secretary of the Kansas Freedmen's Relief Association, which was chartered in that year to aid freed enslaved persons in their emigration from the South. Hebbard was a statistician, active in state politics, and served as a compiler for A. T. Andreas' landmark History of Kansas, published in 1883. Hebbard died in Topeka in 1894.
