Overview

This collection of papers of Virginia B. Docking, wife of Kansas Governor George Docking and mother of Kansas Governor Robert B. Docking, includes letters received by her from U.S. Presidents Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Baines Johnson and their wives from 1955 to 1961. The collection also includes slides and an accompanying audio tape and script, presented March 11, 1978 by the Shawnee County Democratic Party at an event honoring Mrs. Docking.

Biography of Virginia B. Docking

Virginia Blackwell Docking was born in Columbus, Mississippi to Thomas Grant and Annie Strong (Duncan) Blackwell. She attended Wichita State University (Wichita, Kansas), and then the University of Kansas, from which she graduated in 1924. Shortly after graduating, she married George Docking, with whom she had two sons, George Richard Docking and Robert Blackwell Docking. Her husband was elected Governor of Kansas in 1956, serving from 1957 to 1961. George Docking died on January 20, 1964. Later that year, Mrs. Docking served as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. In 1966, their eldest son Robert was elected Governor of Kansas. He served four terms in office.

This collection of papers of Virginia B. Docking, wife of Kansas Governor George Docking and mother of Kansas Governor Robert B. Docking, includes letters received by her from U.S. Presidents Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon Baines Johnson and their wives from 1955 to 1961. The collection contains a photograph of Governor George Docking with U.S. President Harry Truman and Secretary of State Dean Acheson, as well as slides and an accompanying audio tape and script, presented March 11, 1978 by the Shawnee County Democratic Party at an event honoring Mrs. Docking. The photograph and slides, which contain many images of Mrs. Docking and her family, are at RH MS-P 468. An audio cassette tape which accompanies the slides is at RH MS Cassette Tape 33.
