Eugene or Gene Bernofsky is a part-time environmental documentary filmmaker. This collection consists of film awards, photographic materials, and materials related to creating and fundraising for his films.

All materials in this collection except the audiovisual items are stored in the KU Annex off-site storage area.

Biography of Gene Bernofsky

Eugene or Gene Bernofsky, an alumnus of the University of Kansas, has been an environmental activist and filmmaker since the mid-1960s. In 1965 he won the Mid-America Art Show at the Nelson Art Gallery in Kansas City, MO and in 1978 he had his first one-man show of 16mm films at the San Francisco Art Institute.

He has won numerous awards and praise for many of the films he has produced, which include Neshabek, I Never Saw the Buffalo, Which Side Are You On?, Undermining Yellowstone, A River Cries, Red Thunder, Swimming Woman, Diet Coke Montana, Trembling Waters, and Dongo Kundu, among others. He was a founder of the artists' commune Drop City in southeastern Colorado in 1965.

Gene Bernofsky lives in Missoula, Monatana.
