History of the University of Kansas Office of Analytics, Institutional Research, and Effectiveness (AIRE)

The Office of Analytics, Institutional Research, and Effectiveness (AIRE) has existed under different names at the University of Kansas since at least the 1970s. Its various departments were consolidated as the Office of Institutional Research and Planning (OIRP) in 1974.

The OIRP’s duties included conducting surveys of students and faculty at the University of Kansas, as well as tracking KU’s involvement in inter-university data exchanges and its national rankings relative to other universities.

The OIRP also monitored KU’s compliance with new affirmative action policies that were adopted throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including by collecting information on women and people of color employed at the university.

In 2019, the OIRP merged with the Business Intelligence Office to form Analytics, Institutional Research, and Effectiveness. AIRE continues the ORIP’s duties.

Scope and Contents

Most of the records in RG 04 are from studies conducted by the office. Many of these studies took the form of surveys given out to students and/or faculty; AIRE and its predecessor departments also maintained records of faculty activities (namely teaching load analyses) and of both student and faculty/staff attrition rates.

The record group includes AIRE profiles of specific departments at the University of Kansas. These profiles focus on faculty and financial information. Some AIRE records track the University’s standing with outside organizations, such as in the U.S. News and World Report’s college rankings.
