Personal papers of George Baxter Smith
Overview
Smith served as vice chancellor and dean of the university from 1959 to 1961, vice chancellor for institutional research and planning, and dean of the university from 1961 to 1972. Dr. Smith retired from administration in 1972 and from academic service in 1977. This collection is a reflection of his work at the University of Kansas.

Biography of George Baxter Smith
George Baxter Smith was born in 1907 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Smith earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Minnesota, and a doctorate at Columbia University. He came to the University of Kansas (KU) in 1941 and served as an education professor, Dean of the School of Education, and director of summer sessions. Dr. Smith took military leave from KU in August 1942, graduating from the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth in 1943, and serving in Europe where he received a Purple Heart. After World War II, Dr. Smith returned to KU. He served on the University Budget Committee in 1947, and was appointed dean of the university in 1952. He was a member and president of the National Association of Deans and Directors of Summer Sessions. George Baxter Smith died in 2003.
