James W. Woelfel was appointed Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religion in 1966 and has served as Director of the Western Civilization Program at KU since 1985. Biography of James W. Woelfel
Born on August 16, 1937 in Galveston, Texas, James Woelfel earned degrees from the University of Oklahoma (B.A. in Letters), Cambridge and Yale (M.A.), and the University of St. Andrews (Ph.D.) Appointed as Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religion in 1966, he became Director of the Western Civilization Program at KU in 1985. His honors, awards, and grants are numerous and range from national fellowships for research excellence to University of Kansas teaching awards and invitations to speak at various seminars and university lectures.
Throughout his career, Professor Woelfel has maintained membership with several professional organizations including the American Academy of Religion and Society for Values in Higher Education. His list of publications is extensive and includes various articles in academic journals, entries in the Encyclopedia of World Biography, text books for use in Humanities and Western Civilization programs at the college/university level, and book reviews for publishers.
