History of the Rotary Club of Lawrence

The Rotary Club was organized in Lawrence on April 6, 1917, just 12 years after Rotary was founded by attorney Paul Harris and some of his business associates. Charter members of the Lawrence organization were Arthur Weaver and W. C. Simons, first president of the Lawrence club.

Over the years, Rotary clubs have split off from the original group started in 1917; there are now 3 clubs in Lawrence, Kansas - the Monday lunch group (whose records are located at Spencer Research Library), the breakfast group that started in 1994, and the Central Lawrence group that was chartered in 2003.

Rotary International was started as an organization allowing professionals with diverse backgrounds to exchange ideas and form lifelong friendships. Rotary is a service organization; major projects for the entire organization have included helping to eradicate polio, helping to purify water around the world, and other humanitarian efforts. Local clubs also perform community service projects.
