History of the Smoky Hill River Missionary Baptist District Association
In response to a resolution by the Missionary Baptist State Convention of Kansas, the Smoky Hill River Missionary Baptist District Association was formed on June 12, 1904. Its membership is composed of African American churches and individuals located within the Smoky Hill River basin of Kansas.
The objective of the association, as stated in its constitution, is to promote the preaching of the gospel, to establish churches in the district, and to cooperate with the state convention in the work of missions and education throughout the state and nation.
Eventually, the original name was considered too lengthy and was shortened to the Smoky Hill District Association. The organization held its Centennial Session on August 4-7, 2004.

Scope and Contents
The papers of the Smoky Hill River Missionary Baptist District Association report the organization's membership and activities from 1904-1924, and from 1942-1977. There is a break in the records from 1924-1942. The collection consists chiefly of hardbound record books, containing minutes of the organization's annual sessions, quarterly executive board meetings, and quarterly financial reports. Included in the first book are the organization's constitution, bylaws, and a list of charter members. The record books and their loose inserts are arranged chronologically. Other papers, consisting mainly of membership records and meeting programs, are arranged alphabetically with chronological subarrangement.
The Smoky Hill River Missionary Baptist District Association Papers date from 1904 to 1977. They are arranged in two series: Record Books, and Correspondence & Programs.
