William Hambleton was a distinguished geologist in the state of Kansas, both with the Kansas Geological Survey and as a professor at the University of Kansas. The collection includes Hambleton's vita, articles written in appreciation of Hambleton, Kansas Geological Survey documents and publications, and the many awards presented to Hambleton in the form of certificates and plaques.

Biography of William W. Hambleton
William W. Hambleton was born on September 10, 1921 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the son of Harry Coxen and Ella Moore Hambleton. He graduated from McCaskey High School in 1939. He attended Franklin and Marshall College and graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry in 1943. In World War II, Hambleton served with the 84th Infantry Division, 335th Battalion, G. Company, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned a Bronze Star for his service.
On September 7, 1946 he married Nancy Jane Schnelli, with whom he would have two children: Ann Louise, October 1, 1950 and Jeffrey Craig, August 26, 1952.
Hambleton earned his Masters of Science degree in Geology from Northwestern University in 1947, and his PhD from the University of Kansas in 1951.
He was employed by the University of Kansas Department of Geology from 1949-1987, serving as Instructor from 1949-1950, Shell Fellow from 1950-1951, Assistant Professor from 1951-1956, Associate Professor from 1957-1962, and Professor of Geology and Geophysics from 1963-1987.
Hambleton also held many positions in the Kansas Geological Survey. He was Assistant Director from 1956-1962, Associate Director 1963-1969 and Director and State Geologist of the Kansas Geological Survey from 1970-1987.
Hambleton died on October 4, 2012 in Lawrence.
