Biography of Edwin Emery Slosson (1865-1929)
Edwin E. Slosson was born in Kansas in 1865, attending Leavenworth High School and the University of Kansas. He taught for several years at the University of Wyoming as professor of chemistry before accepting a position at The Independent magazine in 1904, where was able to combine journalism with science. From 1921 until his death in 1929, Slosson was Science Service Director in Washington, D.C.
Slosson married May Preston, the first known woman to receive a doctorate from the University of Cornell. They had two children, Preston Slosson and his elder sibling, who died young from scarlet fever. Preston Slosson later became literary editor for The Independent.
