Biographical / Historical
The Pony Express opened officially on April 3, 1860, when riders left simultaneously from St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. The first westbound trip was made in 9 days and 23 hours and the eastbound journey in 11 days and 12 hours. The pony riders covered 250 miles in a 24-hour day. In anticipation of the Pony Express' hundredth birthday the Western Pony Express Trails Association joined forces with the Central Overland Pony Express Trails Association; they formed the National Pony Express Centennial Association. It conducted the 1960 centennial re-ride which involved the President of the United States and all the Governors through whose states the Pony Express ran.
