Biography of Russell and Elizabeth Cartwright
Russell W. Cartwright was born in 1909 in Coffeyville, Kansas. He attended school there and graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School and the Coffeyville Junior College. Cartwright earned a Bachelor of Science degree at the Kansas State Teachers College and, in 1941, received a Master of Science degree in Education from the University of Kansas. In 1935 Cartwright began teaching at Coffeyville's Cleveland School and, in 1942, became principal there. He remained in that position until his retirement 32 years later, in 1974. That year he was appointed to the Coffeyville City Commission; he had served on both the Urban Renewal Board of Directors and the Planning and Zoning Commission, both for four years.
Elizabeth Cartwright was born in Yale, Kansas. She married Russell W. Cartwright in 1929. She worked as a substitute teacher and was highly active in various organizations, including the Coffeyville branch of the United Church Women, the Girl Scouts, and the Patrons of Delta Sigma Theta.
Russell W. and Elizabeth Cartwright had four children, Teresa, Cora, LaDonna, and a son.
