History of the Lawrence Farmers' Market
The Lawrence, Kansas Farmers' Market was started in the summer of 1976 at the Chamber of Commerce parking lot with only 3-4 vendors per week. Within three years, the numbers of vendors had grown to 49. In the years after, the Farmers' Market has grown to involve two locations in public parking lots, one between 8th and 9th streets and New Hampshire and Rhode Island, and the other between 10th and 11th on Vermont Street. The market now has over 80 vendors and operates 31 weeks of the year. The Market acts as a "producer-only" market, in which the consumer gets to interact with the producer, rancher, or cook of what they purchase. If an item is made, raised, or cooked in Kansas it can be sold at this market.
