Papers of Lady Pauline Trevelyan, 1827-1866, and other family members, 1809-1879, Great Britain and Europe

 Collection
Call Number: MS C133

Overview

Lady Pauline Trevelyan, wife of Sir Walter Calverley Trevelyan, was the center of a coterie of Pre-Raphaelites (John Ruskin, William Bell Scott, Algernon Swinburne, John Everett Millais, etc.) who often visited Wallington Hall, the Trevelyan estate in Northumberland, England. She took an intelligent interest in art, literature, science, technology, etc., and was a good amateur artist herself. She and her husband spent much time travelling in Great Britain and Europe, particularly Italy. Most of her journals are full of detail and contain small sketches within the text. The sketchbooks are scattered in date between 1834 and 1866 and complement the travel journals to some extent. The sketches are often annotated with date and place, and notes have been made in some of the sketchbooks. The collection also includes some estate and household papers and several miscellaneous items.
