Overview

A list of Natural History specimens and curiosities in a small private English museum, collected approximately between 1814 and 1850. The items in the catalog appear to reflect a world trip in 1814; marine specimens collected at Cromer, Brighton, and other resorts in the 1840s; land specimens collected in the Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex area in the 1840s; gifts from the British Isles and abroad; and specimens and curios collected by Richard Bailey while abroad in 1841 and 1850.

Scope and Contents

Index to volume is located at the back of the volume, "A list of about 2,000 specimens of Natural History" dating from 1846-1850.

Pages 3-8 (100 specimens) provide information about Osteology - Vertebrata (dry). Pages 1 and 2 (approximately 40 specimens) are missing from the volume.

Items regarding the muscular system (approximately 8 specimens) are on page 10. Pages 11-47 (approximately 350 specimens) are supposed to cover organs of the nervous system, senses, circulatory, respiratory, digest, and reproductive systems, but these pages are also missing from the volume.

Specimens in Natural History (stuffed and in spirits) are on pages 49-71 (approximately 350 specimens). Pages 73-77 regarding anatomy morbid are missing from the volume.

Fossils are described on pages 82-90 (approximately 240 specimens), and conchology on pages 92-96 (approximately 300 specimens). Mineralogy (approximately 700 specimens) are on pages 98-108.

Nests (not of birds) are on page 111 (10 specimens), and miscellaneous curios - antiques, anthropology, souvenirs - are on pages 112-113 (50 specimens). Lepidoptera listed by genus on pages 117-122 (approximately 150 specimens, most information not completed for these specimens).
