Geography [By] William Dunbar

 Collection — Volume: 1
Call Number: MS C290

Overview

The Reverend William Dunbar, D.D., who had been employed as a tutor prior to his ordination in 1807, served as the minister of Applegarth in Dumfries, Scotland until his death aged 82 in 1861. This manuscript geography textbook illustrated with engraved prints (1 time diagram and 5 maps: World, Europe, England, Asia and Africa) suggests that teaching may have been a continuing activity for him. The title page is inscribed "Wm. Dunbar, Applegarth Manse, 1818" in the same hand as the text, so he was the copyist and possibly also the author. Following a general introduction, the countries of Europe, Asia, Africa and America are described in a series of short chapters. Latitude and longitude tables and a list of geographical facts end the volume.
