Biography of H. Gertrude Whitley Bardwell
Helen Gertrude Whitley was born in Hartville, Missouri to Frank and Opal Whitley. The family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where, shortly thereafter, Opal Whitley died. After Frank Whitley moved to California to find a job, Gertrude and her two sisters were raised by their grandparents.
Gertrude attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. There, she was active in a number of groups, including the Alpha Iota chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha (for which she served as basileus), the history club (of which she was president), and the Young Women's Christian Association. Gertrude graduated magna cum laude in 1939, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. She returned to Kansas City, where she worked as a teacher. During World War II, Gertrude was a charter member and first President of the Twin Citians, a women's social group that was involved in the 1960s struggle to desegregate public facilities in the area.
