Ernest Edward Bayles taught in the School of Education at the University of Kansas from 1928-1968. This collection contains clippings, publications, proofs, and manuscripts regarding his scholarly work, as well as personal correspondence with his family.

Biography of Ernest Bayles

Ernest Edward Bayles was born in 1897 and raised in Kansas. He received his A.B. in 1919 and his A.M. in 1922, both from the University of Kansas. In 1932, Bayles received his Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. He married Lucene Spencer (1896-1986) and the couple had four sons: Spencer, Lewis, Hugh, and John.

In 1928, Bayles joined the faculty of KU in the School of Education, and reached full professor status in 1946. He retired in 1968 and passed away nine years later.

Scope and Contents

The collection includes family correspondence with Lucene (nee Spencer) Bayles, Bayles' wife; all four of his sons; Edward O. Sisson, uncle; and Ward Bayles, Ernest's brother. Also notable in the collection is correspondence with Kenneth E. Anderson, dean of the School of Education at KU, as well as some publications by Anderson and other educational professionals. The collection also includes some administrative information about the School of Education at KU in the mid-20th century, as well as copies of and reviews about Bayles' own publications on educational practice and theory.
