Scope and Contents
This small certificate from the city of Lawrence, shows the weight of G. W. Berry's wagonload as officially weighed by N. C. W. Sillett. The printed form, titled "City Scales," shows gross weight, wagon weight, and net weight. Handwritten on the reverse are the words "Diamond Springs Station," together with brief directional notes and the names of two persons. The Diamond Springs campsite, about twenty miles southwest of Council Grove, was favored by Santa Fe Trail travelers for its springwater. Though the stage station was destroyed in 1863 and not rebuilt, Diamond Spring remained a valuable water source and campsite for travelers.
