Biography of O. O. Potter, b. 1828.

O.O. Potter was born in 1828 in Pennsylvania, where he married Adella Denny. In 1882, Potter moved with his wife from Crawford County, Pennsylvania to Wellington (Sumner County), Kansas, where Potter, William Thompson, and Potter's brother-in-law, James P. Denny, became proprietors of Oxford Water Mills and dealers in flour, meal, grain, and livestock.

A handwritten letter, dated January 30, 1883, from O.O. Potter (Sumner County, Kansas) to William George Tritt (Meadville, Pennsylvania) on twelve leaves. Potter's letter is to the husband of his wife's sister, Elizabeth (Denny) Tritt. A newly-arrived Sumner County resident, Potter writes of Sumner County's weather, its suitability for crops and livestock, and its other economic aspects. In the greater portion of his letter, Potter writes in detail of his 1882 rail travels in Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado, his attendance at Denver, Colorado's National Mining and Industrial Exposition of 1882, and of his harrowing descent in a Rocky Mountain mine shaft. An accompanying envelope bears annotations by Tritt, confirming his receipt of minerals and coins sent by Potter from his travels.
