Scope and Contents

Thaliarchus is a Greek name, and "Thaliarci" has a Latin genitive ending, while "grapte" [sculptor] has a Greek genitive ending, suggesting that the writer of the inscription was Greek. This feature and the prominence of the information about Thaliarcus suggest that he may have carved the titulus for his daughter himself.

The style and high quality of the lettering suggests a date in the first quarter of the first century C.E. The Luna marble (creamy with distinctive greenish streaks) comes from Latium, the region of Italy in which Rome is located. The titulus would have been mounted on the outer wall of the columbarium, a small building holding funeral ashes, belonging to the Montanus family. It would typically have been situated near a road on the outskirts of Rome.

This inscription probably refers to the Lucius Veneleius Montanus who was proconsul of Pontus and Bithynis early in the reign of Nero (54-68 A.D.) and whose son and grandson bore the same name. Claudia would have been a member of his household, even possibly his common-law wife, since marriage between a high-ranking Roman and the daughter of a freed slave would not have been allowed.
