Custodial History
Sir Charles Stuart, 1st baron Stuart de Rothesay, 1779-1845, was chargé d'affaires, Madrid, in 1808; 1810 envoy to Portugal; began using the supra-libros found in this volume in 1812 (English Heraldic Book-stamps, page 358); 1815-1845 ambassador, etc, to Paris, The Hague, Russia.
Sotheby's sold Stuart's library in 1855. The supra-libros is the only reason for naming this collection for him; the bookseller did not mention his name. The volume was sold to the Kenneth Spencer Research Library as 1 of 3 volumes of "Spain and Mexico. An important collection of 134 Spanish Treaties"--presumably all Stuart since Spencer Research Library's volume is numbered 2, and one of the numbers written on item 1 is "2". It is possible that the other volumes contained only printed matter and were put in Rare Books or Summerfield, but they have not been located.
Note: MS E38 "Hacienda de España y America," 83 MS & pr items in 2 volumes, have the same supra-libros, but are marked vol. 1 & vol. 2, and appear to be on finance.
