History of Tangier under British rule
Tangier, a city in the modern Kingdom of Morocco, was given to England by Spain in 1661 as part of the dowry of the Portuguese infanta Catherine of Braganza. By 1662 Tangier was completely occupied by the English, though the native population fought against the English garrison stationed there.
By 1680, between high and fraudelent costs related to improving the city's defenses and the lack of English settlers, Parliament decided to leave Tangier. The English garrison destroyed Tangier and its ports before Morocco began occupying the town in February 1684.

.25 Linear Feet (1 document case containing 9 folders) : Ornamentation: Item 9 contains a plan of "The Cupboard Room," perhaps in Whitehall. Seal (applied) of Privy Council on item 7. Scribe: No hand appears to be repeated, not even in the docketing. Only item 7 is definitely an original; item 5 might be a draft; the others are probably contemporary copies.

These documents probably belonged to one of the Tangier commissioners, perhaps John Creed, addressee of item 7 (an order dated 1683 to surrender the Tangier documents to the Secretary of War) and secretary of the commission since 1662.
