Custodial History

Perhaps acquired with the small similar Oliver Wendall Holmes - Brown collection (see under Holmes), recorded as the gift of Mrs CF Nelson, wife of Professor Nelson, in the 50s. University Archives indicates that Mrs Nelson was born Hearty Earl Brown, University of Michigan AB 1909 and AM 1910. In 1912 she joined KU as Instructor in Rhetoric. Prof Carl F Nelson was biochemistry chair at KU until his death in 1950, leaving 2 sons [named]. Mrs Nelson died 1974, leaving 2 sons and a sister.

The Holmes-Brown collection also contained an 1861 letter from Phoebe Atkins, a servant, to the Brown family, reporting conditions in Oskaloosa; and an invitation to the 1890 KU Commencement addressed to Miss Ada Brown (These were both handed on to the Kansas Collection in 1967.).
