Biography of Charles Tomlinson

Charles Tomlinson was born in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, Great Briatin, in 1927. He studied at Queen's College Cambridge under poet Donald Davie and taught primary school before securing a position at the University of Bristol, where he taught for the majority of his career (36 years).

Tomlinson's poetry collections include American Scenes and Other Poems (1966), The Shaft (1978), and Skywriting and Other Poems (2003), among others. Tomlinson held visiting positions at the University of New Mexico and at Princeton University; he was always interested in American poetry and culture. Poetical influences included American poets William Carlos Williams, Wallace Stevens, Ezra Pound, Marianne Moore, and others.

Tomlinson was fluent in German, French, and Italian, and served as a translator, as well as an editor, including editing The Oxford Book of Verse in English Translation (1980), as well as a collection of William Carlos Williams' works (1976).

Charles Tomlinson died in 2015.
