Overview

The creator of this travel album, Antonia Williams, has been tentatively identified as the daughter of Sir Hugh Williams (1802-1876). Her full name was Arabella Antonia Williams. During the journey recorded in this album, she was the travel companion of Lady Catherine Minna Jenkins, a sportswoman who later wrote Sport and Travel in Both Tibets (1909).

"Recollections of Somaliland by Antonia Williams, 1904-1905": Album containing typed copy of journal and letters by Miss Williams covering Red Sea (November 19, 1904) Bombay (November 25-December 8, 1904) Aden (December 14); Lion shoot in Somaliland December 15-January 6, 1905 (Bulhar, Bigi river, Karan Faras, Simodi, Kopri Bahar, Galeedub, Gaad, Berbera); January 7-January 14, 1905 Aden & aboard. Includes accounts of shoot by Mr Evelyn Scott Higgins & Capt. [R.F.G.?] Bond. Party included Capt Bond, Mr Higgins, Capt Meynell, Mr La Touche, Lady Jenkins, and Miss Williams. (Bond and Latouche left party December 26). Also 8 trivial manuscript letters thanking her for photos, etc., from Bond, Thomson (Redident), Lady Jenkins, G. Jekyll, Phillips, Higgins, Hugo Meynell.

It also includes ca. 140 photos (mostly of natives) taken by Miss Williams; 18 watercolors and sketches (of landscape by Miss Williams; elephant hair, elephant hide, 2 pressed flowers; sketch map of trek; 2 French ordnance maps of area; misc. clippings.
