Scope and Contents

This pre-Revolutionary genealogy of the Turgot family was compiled in 1775 by Denis François Gastelier de la Tour (1709-1781). Although a number of his heraldic and genealogical works were published, this brief 20-page genealogy apparently remained in manuscript form (see footnote to introduction of 1913 edition of the “Oeuvres de Turgot”).

This was written the year following the appointment of Anne-Robert-Jacques Turgot, 1727-1781, an economist, as Controller-General of France. It traces the family back to the 15th century. The biographical statements accompanying each entry are brief, with two exceptions. Two pages are devoted to Anne-Robert-Jacques Turgot’s father, Michel-Etienne Turgot (1690-1751) who served as Mayor of Paris and was responsible for the creation of the large-scale (bird’s-eye-view style) plan of Paris completed in 1739. His son’s biography occupies one page. The final entry is for Michel-Antoine-François Turgot, born 10 May 1757.
