Additional Information

Dating of the life of Torrington: After 1721 since it refers to the title Torrington, which he did not receive until 1721. Before 1757 since it refers to John Byng, who was executed in 1757, as if he was not only still alive but able to benefit from the account of his father's deeds.

Attribution of authorship: Cataloger suspects either Henry Pattee Byng (died 1747) because of reference to ill-health and expectation of short life by author, or one of the large number of sisters, which would explain shakiness on naval tactics and unfamiliarity with names of foreign naval commanders (misspellings quite explicable if author knew people only from oral accounts).
