Overview

In these 9 sketchbooks, collectively spanning the period 1903-1939, Donald Gunn has recorded his antiquarian and ornithological observations in the form of notes, church plans, sketch maps, sketches of architectural details and diagrammatic sketches of birds. Notebooks 1-4 are antiquarian in subject, while 5-9 are ornithological. The notebooks are for different locations visited and cover various time periods. The churches recorded are in Kent, Middlesex, Norfolk, Surrey and other southern counties of England. Birds were observed in London, including at Staines (Stanwell) reservoir (now near Heathrow Airport in London), and Barn Elms reservoir.

Biography of Donald Gunn

In the notebooks Donald Gunn gives his address in London as 40 Dover Street, W1, the address of the Arts Club. He is presumably the Dr. Donald Gunn who was a member of the Arts Club and gave the same address in 1903 when he donated several African artefacts from the Southern Sudan to the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford.
