Extent

1 volume : Brown calf, plain, coarse and sturdy. 8 raised bands on spine. ; 63 x 41 cm

Scope and Contents

The volume includes 9 drawings of Indian birds on leaves 5-13; 48 drawings of Indian animals and equipment on leaves 14-52, 55-57, 69-70, 73, 81, 86; 41 drawings of Hindu natives: castes, occupations, artisans, beggars, fakirs, dwarfs, in costume, with equipment, on leaves 22-23, 53, 59-68, 71-72, 74-80, 82-85, 87-88.

There are several artists for the drawings, probably Indian, and probably commissioned by (or collected by) an Englishman ("Capt Thomas"?).

The leaves upon which the drawings are mounted are numbered in ink in a formal hand. [1]-90: 1-4, 54,58, 67, 77 are represented only by stubs. Leaves 89-90 no longer have any drawings mounted on them.

The drawings themselves--that is, the original separate sheets--are numbered in hasty pencil 22-123. This fairly recent numeration appears on the album-leaf, not on the original sheets. Within this numeration 74, 78, 95, 106 must have been on the 4 removed leaves. The last few numbers have been modified, and "123" is penciled on leaf 89.

RECENT TITLE (added in pencil to front free endpaper; by bookdealer?): "HINDU ANIMALS & NATIVE TRADES 55 DRAWINGS"

PHYSICAL MAKE-UP AND LOSSES: Most album-leaves bear a single sheet containing a single large drawing. Some bear two or three small sheets, each with a small drawing. There is a tissue guard-sheet before almost every leaf.
