Elmer Richard Limbird photographs
Overview
E.R. Limbird was born in Independence, Kansas and moved at an early age to Gardner, Kansas with his family. He attended business college in Kansas City and then worked as a traveling salesman for the Northwestern Yeast Form Company. The photographs in the collection are views of the Limbird hardware and grocery stores, Limbird and Hilts family members, and scenes of Anthony, Kansas. Also, included is a series of 33 photographs of Anthony, Kansas and a number of small towns nearby in Kansas ans Oklahoma. The photographs were taken on a booster trip the E.R. Limbird and other Anthony businessmen took in about 1910.

Biography of Elmer Richard Limbird
E.R. Limbird was born in Independence, Kansas and moved at an early age to Gardner, Kansas with his family. He attended business college in Kansas City and then worked as a traveling salesman for the Northwestern Yeast Form Company. In 1903, he settled in Anthony, Kansas. He opened a hardware store, located on Main and North Jennings Streets in partnership with Paul Burnett. Later he started a grocery store across the street to the east. Eventually he opened the Limbird and Company Grocery. The store became Limbird and Hilts when Durland J. Hilts, his brother in law, came into the firm and it operated until 1952 when H.J. Hilts closed it.
Mr. Limbird was an officer and stockholder in the Citizens National Bank of Anthony. He also owned the Burchfiel Hotel (which was later made into a bus stop) with P.O. Harold. In 1906 he married Bessie McLean Hilts and had two children, Elizabeth Limbird Althouse and Ruth Limbird Walker.
