 Collection
Call Number: MS 287

Overview

This collection contains research papers gathered by Barbara Backus McCorkle, 1977-2000, while compiling the book A Carto-Bibliography of the Maps in Eighteenth-Century English and American Geography Books, published in electronic format on the University of Kansas' platform ScholarWorks in November 2009. The papers include paper printouts of ESTC (English Short-Title Catalog) records for the books listed in the carto-bibliography and two sets of photocopies of maps listed in the carto-bibliography, one arranged in alphabetical order by book title and the other arranged in geographical order. The photocopies are of maps from books in different collections that were consulted while compiling the carto-bibliography.

Processing Information

Precise order was maintained in transferring from donated status to Special Collections containers. Minimal reordering of written titling was done to create consistency and ease of use. All bibliographic information has been kept with notes, if any, following the first period.

Numbers within brackets [ ] reference the bibliographic placement of that material in the final work. Number signs (#) indicate a reference to bibliographic material outside of that folder. Question marks in parentheses (?) indicate queries placed only on the information directly preceding it (i.e. not including previous information separated by a comma).

Oversize folders have been numbered from the beginning of the material to the end, instead of each box as a self contained entity. There are two separate oversize portions to this collection: 1) MS Qa5: A1-83 contains items removed from the main bibliographic material and 2) MS Qa5: B1-77 is strictly geographic (photocopies of maps). Again, this is for ease of access and organization.
