Custodial History
Quaritch catalogue 888 (1968): "The library of the Somerset Carew was probably the finest Parliamentary library ever formed, but the bulk of it was sold in 1903... What remained after to recent fires was the contents of an alcove in the stable block (which included most of the bound volumes in this collection) and an old box of stitched pamphlets... Most of the manuscripts seem to have been collected by Thomas Carew (1702-1766), M.P. for Minehead from 1739 to 1747, but the unbound pamphlets ... were probably received by his father, also called Thomas. In addition a number of volumes bear the signature of George Carew, the younger brother of the M.P, and apparently a lawyer."
