Documents concerning the city of Sabbioneta (Italy)
172 documents (and similar papers) bound in 1 volume: architectural, urban planning, government, history. Proclamations, financial accounts, letters, contracts, narratives, and official documents issued by or concerning this planned city. Most are from the reign of Vespasiano Gonzaga, Sabbioneta's duke (1531-1591) who turned a village 12 miles SW of Mantua into a model city, and most are concerned with the construction of public buildings, especially the Porta Vittoria, the Porta Imperiale, and the church of S. Maria Incoronata. There are also accounts of the founding of the Monte di Pietaand; rules for its government; vows made by the city at the time of the 1630 plague; accounts of the founding of S. Maria di Vigoreto; and other matter. A number of documents are the work of Nicolo Dondi, whose diary has been published.
