Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a handwritten travel journal titled "My Trip Abroad" which was kept by Anna C. Sullivan as she and her family traveled to Europe. The bulk of the journal was written between July and August, 1914 as World War I began. The journal details traveling to various destinations from Massachusetts to Europe, including Dublin, Ireland, London, England, and Paris, France, as well as the voyage on the S.S. Minnewaska to and from the United States. The journal is signed by the ship's captain, Thomas F. Gates. Sullivan also comments on the environment in Europe at the brink of World War I.

The second part of the journal describes Sullivan's trip to New York, Massachusetts, and Canada in 1920 where she visited relatives and went sightseeing. The manuscript includes a description of a surprise birthday party held in her honor. It also contains a directory of contact information and a short poem. A large-format world map was found folded and loosely inserted at the back of the volume.
