Unbound letters: artistic (and literary and social). The collection includes 140 letters written to Frederic Shields, arranged by writer (usually an artist or literary man). Also in the collection are 3 letters by Shields; 2 letters by Caine to Ernestine Mills (MS 44Eb); 1 letter by Hughes to McLachlan (MS 44Ke); 1 sketch by Shields (MS 44L:38); and 1 printed ticket (MS 44L:3b).

Biography of Frederic Shields (1833-1911)

The minor artist Frederic Shields (of Manchester and London, England) moved in Pre-Raphaelite circles. He was a reliable friend, particularly to D.G. Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown, and often handled practical artistic matters for his acquaintances, helped them with photography, and found patrons and philanthropic objects for them.

Ernestine Mills had access to a large amount of Shields' correspondence, out of which she constructed her Life and Letters of Frederic Shields, 1912 (Kenneth Spencer Research Library has it located at C18239). In it she quoted some letters held by the Spencer Research Library, often with unacknowledged omissions.
