Overview

Two pieces of correspondence from bibliophile and notorious English forger Thomas James Wise (1857-1937). Consists of a 1930 letter written by him to "My dear Robert," and a 1931 postcard to W.R. Smythe in Dublin, Ireland, both sent from Hampstead, England.

Scope and Contents

In the collection is a holograph, signed letter (1 leaf, folded to make 4 pages) from Wise to "My dear Robert," dated June 28, 1930. The other item is a holograph, signed postcard directed to W.R. Smythe Esq., located at 37 Highfield Road, Rathgar, Dublin, ireland, and dated December 14, 1931.

Separated Materials

Found laid in P.S. O'Hegarty's copy of Literary anecdotes of the nineteenth century: contributions towards a literary history of the period, edited by W. Robertson Nicoll and Thomas J. Wise (London, 1895-1896), in Spencer Research Library (Reference) at call number: C18903, v. 1-2.

Clippings dated circa 1945 regarding Elizabeth Barrett Browning's publications, also found in this volume and probably laid in by P.S. O'Hegarty, have been removed to the O'Hegarty file.
