Notes on the Treaty of Paris

 Collection — Folder: 1
Call Number: MS P730

Overview

Found in a copy of The martial review; or, a general history of the late wars; together with the definitive treaty, and some reflections on the probable consequences of the peace, attributed to Oliver Goldsmith and published in 1763, this list makes 6 points about what's wrong with the Treaty of Paris, which was signed in February 1763. The unknown writer took issue with the fact that the treaty was not in English. He also thought that the French should not be allowed to fish at Newfoundland, Canada, or to keep New Orleans, and that the British should have gotten Calais and not Belleisle. The Spanish should have ceded rights to the Bay of Honduras and the Portuguese should have given over the Madeiras for all the trouble they caused. The 7th point on the list gives evidence that the writer of the list had some connection with the Argyle Regiment. The paper on which this list was written was apparently torn from a letter. There is a partial address on the verso of the list "To Captn Jo[hn?] at [...]"
