Biography of Charles R.C. Tichborne

Charles R. C. Tichborne, active 1857-1885, was a chemist, lecturer, and amateur musician in Dublin and the Dublin suburb Blackrock. He was secretary of the Apothecaries Hall of Ireland; interested in public health (adulteration, poisonous lead water-pipes, gas, smallpox, food reports, analysis of spa water) and therefore concerned with Dublin city politics. He was a member of the Royal Irish Academy, the Royal Geological Society of Ireland, and the Royal Dublin Society and takes interest in their proceedings and scientific controversies (his rivals are Prof. Cameron and J. Emerson Reynolds). He published extensively, particularly in the "Medical Press". He gave public lectures on Faraday and on molecular dissociation, and offers courses in pharmacology. After May 1872 he received an honorary Ph.D.; in 1873 he obtained the Chair of Chemistry in Carmichael School; in 1875 he became Examiner in Chemistry, Trinity College.
