Letters to William Cowper, 1st Earl of Cowper (circa 1665-1723) and his mother, Lady Sarah Cowper, regarding governmental, political, and social matters. Cowper served as the first Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain after Scotland joined the Union in the early 1700s.

Custodial History

Apparently collected by Thomas Carew (1702-1766), Member of Parliament for Minehead; remained in the library of the Somerset Carews [Crowcombe Court, near Watchet] until it was sold by Quaritch. All of these items (except the letter from Newcastle at MS P232) show signs of having been mounted in an album.

Engraved portrait of Halifax, 36 x 22.22 cm.; portrait mounted on paper, from an album? Roundel of bust of "George Savile Marquis of Hallifax"; vignette beneath of Halifax offering William and Mary the crown (1689). Originally found with MS P451. Removed to portraits collection located at DK 36B:6.

Engraved portrait of Godolphin by Houbrach, 1740, trimmed to fit album. On verso of the leaf on which the portrait is mounted is a manuscript caption for a letter "Thomas Osbourne 1st Duke of Leeds to Lord Cowper..." Originally found with MS P130. Removed to portraits collection located at DK 36B:7.
