Scope and Contents
The collection consists mainly of correspondence (96 letters) but also includes other material (16 receipts, warrants, etc.). As this correspondence indicates, Spottiswoode & Robertson acted primarily for Scottish nobility and gentry from 1790-1850. Most of the letters are addressed to the firm, James Spottiswoode, or David Robertson, while a smaller number is addressed to other persons. Docketing on most of the items establishes them as business files and helps to identify writers and dates. Although the date range is 1726-1862, the bulk of the documents is 1812-1832. Some material may be unrelated, in particular a small number of military documents and correspondence dating from 1726-1828.
