Biography of Dennis Moore

Dennis Moore served as U.S. Congressman in the House of Representatives for the Kansas Third District for six terms from his election in 1998 until his retirement in 2010. This district includes most of the Kansas side of the Kansas City metropolitan area, including such cities as Overland Park, Olathe, Kansas City, Lenexa, and De Soto. Previously, he had served as the Johnson County District Attorney from 1977 to 1989.

Born in Anthony, Kansas on November 8, 1945, he was a conservative Democrat in a moderately Republican District. A KU graduate, Moore earned his law degree from the Washburn University School of Law, and served in the U.S. Army from 1970 to 1973.

Moore's legislative successes included two measures to improve conditions for servicemen deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq and a law requiring the Consumer Product Safety Commission to issue regulations mandating child-resistant closures on all portable gasoline containers. At some of his public functions he'd play an acoustic guitar and lead the audience in a singalong of popular old songs. After retirement, Moore continued to volunteer with his guitar at senior centers.

Moore was diagnosed with Alzheimers disease in 2011 and became an advocate for funding Alzheimers research. He passed away November 2, 2021.
