Biography of Walter R. Dixon
Walter R. Dixon was born on October 29, 1934. He received his BS in Chemistry in 1956 from City College of New York, M.S. in Physical / Inorganic Chemistry in 1968 from Long Island University, and PhD in 1973 from the Department of Pharmacology at Downstate Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York. From 1975-1978 Dixon served as a postdoctoral candidate in Pharmacology at the University of Colorado Medical Center.
Dixon joined the University of Kansas Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in 1978, serving in this position for 21 years until his retirement in 1999. Walter Dixon's research interests focused on the mechanisms regulating the release of the neurotransmitter norepinephrine from nerve endings in the peripheral and central nervous systems. He also researched the effect of cocaine on the blood pressure and heart rates of conscious, unrestrained rats.
