Biography of Helen R. Hoopes (1878-1973)

Helen Rhoda Hoopes received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Kansas (KU) in 1913. While an undergraduate student, Hoopes became the first woman to edit the University Daily Kansan, though her name never appeared as editor.

Hoopes went on to receive a master's degree in English from KU in 1914. Later that year, she became a faculty member at KU and taught Rhetoric and, starting in 1925, English until her retirement in 1947. During her time at KU, Hoopes helped establish the Gamma Phi Beta sorority chapter; KU Quill Club; Pi Lambda Theta; and Theta Sigma Phi, a women's journalism society.

Hoopes edited Contemporary Kansas Poetry in 1927 and her work has been featured in Kansas Magazine, The Harp, Jayhawk, The Troubadour, American Poetry Magazine, Bozart, Lyric West, Contemporary Verse, Youth’s Companion, The Wichita Eagle, Christian Century, University Review, and in the Kansas City Star.
