Overview
George Worth taught in the Department of English at the University of Kansas from 1955-1995. This collection consists of materials relating to a "Victoria's Jubilees" conference hosted by the English Department in 1987; research and manuscripts for various professional publications; and research, drafts, and correspondence pertaining to Worth's analyses of the writings of Charles Dickens. It also includes records of his service in professional organizations and university committees.

Biography of George J. Worth
George Worth, the son of Austrians Adolph and Theresa Schmerzler Wirtschafter, moved first to London and then Chicago from Vienna after the Nazis occupied his home country.
received his A.B. in 1948 and his M.A. in 1951, both from the University of Chicago. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1954. He joined the University of Kansas faculty in 1955, reaching full Professor status in 1966. That same year he was also named Chairman of the Department, a position he held until 1979.
Worth taught a variety of courses in the English Department, from remedial composition to honors courses and graduate seminars. He won several awards for his teaching, including the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1988 and the Chancellor's Club Career Teaching Award in 1994. His research interests were primarily in Victorian literature, particularly focusing on Charles Dickens. He retired from KU in 1995.
George Worth married Carol L. Dinsdale in 1951. They had one son, Paul, and one daughter, Theresa. George Worth died in October 2016.
